ARTIST STATEMENT

With my floral paintings I explore the concept of female empowerment by rendering a stereotypically feminine subject in a style that is strong and unapologetic. Instead of soft or dainty, these explosive compositions are bold and punchy — even aggressive at times.

By combining delicate patterns with expressive brushstrokes and disruptive marks, I strive to capture a balance between pretty and powerful. The resulting image is both agitated and energized. This speaks to the conflicting messages I hear and the balancing acts I often feel pressured to perform in my experience as a woman. Each work celebrates beauty, the decorative, the “girly” as an act of defiance against conventional definitions of power within society.

Similarly, the energy in these paintings reflects the stress and anxiety that have arisen during this time of COVID-19, political drama and social unrest. We are not perfect and we are badly shaken, but we are not broken. We are still able to grow amidst the chaos.
